The State Key Laboratory of Polymer Physics and Chemistry, which was officially approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, was created from the former Polymer Physics Laboratory, Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) and several other polymer chemistry laboratories of the Institute of Chemistry and Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, CAS, in 2000, and came into operation in 2001.
Basic research of polymer chemistry and physics is the traditional direction and main focus of this lab. New branches and many frontier researches, which include high performance polymeric materials, intellectual polymers, bio-medical polymeric materials and environment-friendly materials etc., have been greatly explored as well to satisfy the growing demand of the economic development of the country.
Elder scientists, represented by Prof. Renyuan Qian, have made great contribution to the development of the lab. At present, this lab has recruited a group of outstanding academic leaders, consisting of 10 research fellows and 18 research associates. To this date, many distinguished researchers, most of whom are supported by The China National Funds for Distinguished Young Scientists, have been introduces through The Hundred Talents Program. Our laboratory undertakes many key scientific research projects from The National Natural Science Fund Committee, and takes part in many 973 and 863 projects from The Ministry of Science and Technology.
At the same time, this lab is equipped by many advanced research instruments, which ensures that we can meet the international first-class research conditions. Conventional equipment, such as spectrum analysis and thermal analysis, rheology equipment and so on, as well as the most frontier equipments, represented by Three Dimensional Reconstruction of Transmission Electron Microscope, Scanning Electron Microscope, Small X-Ray Scattering, Dynamic & Static Light Scattering and Atom Force Microscope, are open to all laboratory staff including students after being trained.
We have built long-term cooperation with various international institutes focusing on polymer. Till now, we have successfully hosted ten times of International Symposium on Polymer Physics, which is very helpful for our communication with not only domestic but foreign scientists as well.
Furthermore, great importance is placed to the training of postgraduates in our laboratory. Our energetic research personnel make up a family full of academic atmosphere. A large number of graduated doctors have acquired a good master of basic professional knowledge and skills, and have played significant roles in the research work. Our graduates are intensively favored by research institutions and companies, for a number of them have become the backbones in their institutions, colleges or universities. Currently there are about 120 doctors and masters in our laboratory.
